Leo Downey Biography Past to Present

leo-adjusted-23 med

Leo Downey was born in Monterey California in 1960. He grew up and went to school in Iceland and then Singapore where in 1970 he began to seriously study the Spanish guitar, eventually this pursuit expanded to electric and steel string acoustic guitars. His professional career began in 1978 in Santa Barbara, California where playing his original songs both solo and with his band, he consistently packed clubs in Southern California. In 1992 he was offered a three record deal with Sony Records and a promotional contract with Budweiser.

•”Downey is a BRILLIANT guitarist, with a superb instrumental acoustic guitar album and an equally FASCINATING rock record. Downey is a MAJOR TALENT who bears repeated listening, no matter what, Downey is a MUST SEE!”
Los Angeles Reader

•“The man is ALIVE AND WANTED! Leo Downey is talented….HE ROCKS!…and he’s got a voice as big as all outdoors!”
Bill Locey – Los Angeles Times

He felt his spirit calling him. He recognized a pivotal fork in the road of his life and choose to follow his heart, to the consternation of many, and leave the world behind. He lived most of the next three years wandering in the spirit, sleeping on the ground under the open sky, surviving as much as possible on what he could hunt and gather. Alone in the semi-arid desert of the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Native Chumash “House of the Sun” their “Garden of Eden”, he experienced miracles. He began guiding people into this desert on vision quests, earned his wilderness guiding license and worked extensively as a volunteer on the California Condor Recovery Project. In this setting he fell in love and married his wife. In 1998 they moved to the Canadian Rockies and began raising their family and a herd of buffalo.

•“Downey combines innocence with a startling awareness of the world around him, to invoke wondrous spiritual images…the melodies are tempered with a fury that can embroil us in a torrent, an emotional downpour!”
Eugene Pidgeon – KCQR Santa Barbara

•”Headliner Leo Downey DID IT ALL! The audience was AWESTRUCK by his talents…his strong classical influences and a wide selection of self-written songs which brought the crowd to their feet in seconds!”
Review Herald

This Canadian road led him full circle back to the roots of why he loved to write, sing and perform music in the first place. Leo is a prolific writer of true stories in song. He sings honestly about real things, both serious and funny, love and spirituality. He tries to capture real life without limits musically or creatively. There is something unique about Leo that is both blatant and hard to put your finger on.  This time, his time has come.

•“When I featured Downey’s Heaven and Hell as album of the week, I received more calls than any other album I’ve ever featured…People want to know “WHO IS THAT GUY?!”
Rick Miller – KMMT Mammoth

• “It was MADNESS! Sheer and beautiful MADNESS! Downey gave an excitable gathering of industry moguls and labels bigwigs a full-service dosage of his ARENA WORTHY rock and roll!”
Eugene Pidgeon – Santa Barbara Independent

California in Fall

Leo at Wagon

It is so beautiful here this time of year. It brings back memories of when I was a kid in Monterey and Santa Barbara. The sky gets bluer and the air is clean and crisp, but not as cold as a rats ass! like it is at home right now at the ranch. It is wonderful to re connect with old friends. I will be with five of my old friends from high school in San Francisco next weekend and then visiting some friends from when I was just a little shaver in Monterey. I can hardly wait to see and feel the Big Sur Coast again. I’m working very hard and enjoying every minute of it. Thanks for following my adventure.

California Update

Well, I made it to Santa Ynez and the buffalo is on the way. I’m heading up to San Francisco and Monterey to play at the wedding of an old friend. I hope to do a solo show in Monterey and I am investigating venues in that regard. I’ll keep you posted and thanks for following my adventures in California.

California Tour

Hi Everybody,

Karen and I are doing our last buffalo tour of the season, it’s a crystal clear blue sky day and the leaves are just starting to turn color. I’m getting prepared to leave for California next week. I’ll be selling buffalo meat, putting together a three piece rock band, making  a new CD and doing shows around California. I have written a bunch of new songs and I’m really excited about all of it! I will be keeping my web site and blog etc. up to date and adding video clips and all kinds of things I couldn’t do very well in the boonies with slow speed.

Announcing my new website!

Hi everyone!

I have a new version of my website online and ready to rock now, just in time for my upcoming shows this Friday and Saturday! The new site is a self-hosted custom themed Wordpress blog, and this is going to be the epicenter for all my online news and communication. I can hopefully post lots of updates to my blog and have them automatically fan out across the web to crosspost on my social networking sites, because it’s real hard to keep up with everything if it is not in one central place.

You can get automatic updates from my new site through my RSS feed, or if you are like me and are not sure what an RSS feed really is then you can get the updates to come right in your email. We will be bringing all sorts of new content here soon, new music clips to the website’s discography section, maybe a video gallery and other fun stuff.

I also have a Twitter account now, twitter.com/leodowney. Which is going to show up here on my blog, my myspace page, on my facebook wall and which will be updating my facebook status every time I tweet. Whatever a tweet is?

Have a look and let me know what you think!
